Valérie Potvin - Dissolution
The project Dissolution is divided into a material and a digital world. The first section presents a monumental sculptural installation of a headless, fragmented and disjointed skeleton and the second part shows a video projection of works decomposing under water.
This work is inspired by natural history, archeological excavations and underwater explorations. The symbols she uses, such as death and sex, recall themes anchored in the present: sexual violence, power relations, climate change, loss of biodiversity and threat of extinction. The proposal is charged with this awareness, its meaning is underscored with the advent of the #Metoo movement and the pandemic.
Potvin currently explores ecofeminist approach, plays with scales and creates unlikely bodies whose realism is established with the evocation of contemporary social, economic and political issues.
This work was produced in artist residency at the ZK/U in Berlin and was funded by the Canada Council for the Arts as part of the Frankfurt 2020 special initiative: Canada as a guest of honour in Germany.
